FAQs

We’re here to help

We understand that you may have queries before visiting us and we have aimed to answer some of the most frequently asked questions here. If you have anything else you would like to talk about however, please do not hesitate to call us – our team is always happy to help.
A dental hygienist specialises in preventive oral care, knowing what to look for to help maintain healthy teeth and gums, as well as performing thorough and professional level plaque and calculus removal to supplement your home care, and providing guidance on maintaining optimal daily oral hygiene.

A scale and polish treatment involves the removal of plaque and calculus from the teeth, followed by polishing to make them shine. It’s a process that not only helps your teeth look their best, but enhances oral hygiene, helps prevent gum disease, and leaves your teeth feeling clean and fresh.

Ultimately, how often you visit a dental hygienist depends on your individual wants and needs. Most patients require a visit every six months for optimum care. However, your dentist or hygienist may suggest more frequent visits if you have active gum (periodontal) disease. Our Confidence Membership programme includes two hygiene appointments for healthy teeth and gums per year with your Ivy Dental hygienist.
Dental hygiene appointments are typically not painful. Sometimes people experience a little discomfort during the cleaning process, especially if there’s significant calculus build-up, but your Ivy Dental hygienist will always aim to ensure your comfort at all times. In extreme cases, local anaesthesia can be used if necessary. Brigitte is sensitive to the needs of all our patients and will discuss any of your needs and concerns before your treatment to make sure you have the best experience possible.
Yes, dental hygienists are trained to identify common dental issues. They check for signs of gum disease, cavities, and oral cancer. If they detect any concerns, they will discuss them with you and may recommend further evaluation by your Ivy Dental dentist.
